The youth of Team HEAD Penn once again dominated the National Intercollegiate Racquetball Championships. More than 300 players from 45 schools took to the courts on the campus of the Arizona State University looking to bring home a national championship. In each of the top championship divisions, players from Team HEAD Penn reached the finals.
After a runner-up finish last year, Taylor Knoth – a sophomore from Oregon State - took the next step and won his first collegiate title in the Men’s Singles division. Knoth (YouTek Royal Flush) partnered with a Beaver teammate to finish third in the Men’s Doubles division. Knoth’s play helped pace Oregon State to the overall team championship. The national championship was the fourth consecutive for the Beavers.
University of Alabama’s Sharon Jackson led the Crimson Tide with a championship in the Women’s Doubles division and a second place finish in the Women’s Singles division. Jackson (YouTek Blackjack) won the singles championship as a freshman in 2010. Her performance this year helped Alabama to runner-up finishes in the overall team and women’s team competition. In addition to her on-court awards, Sharon was selected as the 2011 recipient of the Norman Wilensky Scholarship. The annual award is presented to a student-athlete displaying outstanding academics, racquetball achievements and team loyalty.
Other members of Team HEAD Penn bringing home medals in the top divisions from Tempe include:
John Chisholm (YouTek Royal Flush) – Boston University
Fourth Place – Men’s Singles
Allan Crocket (YouTek Blackjack) – University of Alabama
Second Place – Men’s Doubles
Sheryl Lotts (YouTek Blackjack) – Baldwin Wallace College
Third Place – Women’s Singles & Second Place – Women’s Doubles
With his win in the Men’s Singles division, Knoth earns a one year appointment to the USA Racquetball Adult National Team pool of players. Players from that pool will represent Team USA at all international and world competitions, including the 2011 Pan American games in October.
