At the women´s super G in San Sicario Head-Tyrolia athlete Christine Sponring has raced sensationally to the podium twice. The Austrian was close to the victory and almost left behind the whole World elite in the competitions taking place on the piste “Fraiteve Olympique” on January 26th and 28th. Altogether it was the third place on the podium for the Head-Tyrolia racer. So she should also have gained a spot for the World Championships in Are.
The first super G on Friday was caught up for Altenmarkt (AUT) where the competition had to be cancelled before. Here Sponring went on the slope where the athletes fought for Olympic medals last winter with bib 36 and became third promptly. The Head-Tyrolia athlete draw a narrow line and braved the course which was already marked by lane grooves. In the finish she clocked 1:25,80 minutes and so was only nine tenths of a second behind the winner. Before the Austrian had reached her first second place at the slalom in Copper Mountain in 2001. "I don´t really know how I did it. The slope was prepared well and I felt quite good", Sponring analyzed her coup. In doing so the Head-Tyrolia skier succeeded to jump on the podium in her very first super G ever at the World Cup.
On Sunday then another great performance should follow: At the super G Sponring made it anew to place three - this time just by a hair behind the winner. Starting off into the race wih bib four the Austrian set the first clear benchmark by a leap of 2,5 seconds which wasn´t beaten by anybody for a long time. Finally Sponring only missed the victory barely by three tenths of a second. "After Friday I also had a good feeling today and I succeeded to show a good run. I´m really satisfied", the Head-Tyrolia athlete reported after her third place on the podium altogether. "I hope now that I can take part in the World Championships."
In the meantime 23 years old Sponring has arrived on the nineth place in the super G World Cup standings. That should give her a boost for the forthcoming World Championships. There Christine Sponring´s favorite discipline - the super G - is on the women´s agenda on February 4th. With the twofold third place from San Sicario the Austrian returns right on time in the world elite and can hope for a spot in the strong Austrian team now. “ The coaches have to decide”, the Head-Tyrolia athlete knows. But she offered an apllication at the best herself at the weekend.
