Rainer Schönfelder joins HEAD Racing Team

April 29th, 2008

Another top skier has joined HEAD to strengthen its Racing Team in the coming season: Rainer Schönfelder has signed a contract for several years with HEAD and will be equipped with the full package of skis, bindings and boots. 30-year old Schönfelder is looking for a new challenge with one of the most successful ski equipment suppliers of the past year when top HEAD skiers won as many as five of the twelve crystal globes. This outstanding achievement convinced the remarkable former slalom specialist turned all-rounder: “I am planning to compete in all disciplines next year and to do so I need top equipment”, is Schönfelder’s explanation for his decision.

The Austrian winter sports star is yet another asset to the HEAD Racing Team. HEAD continues to pursue the goal of strengthening the team with top skiers. “For us, quality is more important than quantity”, says HEAD CEO Johan Eliasch and adds: “Rainer Schönfelder is an extraordinary character and an excellent skier; that makes him the perfect match. It goes without saying that he offers great marketing potential as well.” Rainer Salzgeber, HEAD Racing Director is also pleased about the new team member. “Rainer is Austrian and a remarkable character who will be a real asset for our team; and in addition to this he will be very important for our R&D department, because he’s a real tinkerer and fiddles about until everything is just right. We are very much looking forward to working with him.”

Schönfelder made his decision after thorough consideration “I have been testing extensively; we really put the material through its paces with a focus on slalom and giant slalom for a six day period. After this my decision was clear: The package fits perfectly, even though we will keep on fine-tuning the details. This step brings me closer to my goal of winning the Overall World Cup in one of the coming three years – with HEAD.”

Rainer Schönfelder has so far won five World Cup races and two medals at the Olympics in Torino 2006 as well as the silver medal in the World Cup slalom of Bormio in 2005. Fellow members on the HEAD team will be, among others, Bode Miller, Didier Cuche and Hermann Maier who made HEAD the number 1 in the FIS brand ranking in downhill and Super-G.
