3rd consecutive podium for Maria Riesch

January 17th, 2010

It’s Maria’s third top-3 result in a row as she also came in 2nd at Flachau on Tuesday and on Saturday in giant slalom in Maribor. It’s also her third podium in slalom so far this season after her first win at Levi. The Bavarian was 5th and 4th in other slalom races at Aspen and Zagreb, which allows her to reinforce her lead in the slalom World Cup standings. Since her win at Levi, Maria was eight times on the podium in four events.

The skier from Garmisch-Partenkirchen managed to regain the first place in the Overall standings with 922 points – 28 more than her friend Lindsey Vonn who didn’t qualify for the second run today. The battle between both colleagues may well last until the Finals in March.

“It’s a strong series but I was aiming for victory this morning after my strong performance yesterday,” she told the press. “I tried my best again but the conditions were demanding especially in the very bumpy second run. The visibility was not very good either and I was not able to fight as hard as I wanted in the lower part of that final run.”

“It’s always good to get onto the podium especially when you were not able to fully achieve your potential but I have been looking for my second win of the season. At least I know now that I can excel in all disciplines, this is good for my moral prior travelling to Canada next month.”

Maria is now facing a series of speed events at Cortina d’Ampezzo and St. Moritz. A giant slalom and a Super-combined are also planned in Italy and then in Switzerland.

With only one slalom left on the World Cup calendar - held at Garmisch-Partenkirchen during the Finals in two month - the HEAD champion has a very good chance to retain her World Cup title. She also belongs to the group of favorites for a medal at the coming Olympics at Whistler Mountain.
