Fenninger takes second in St. Anton

January 13th, 2013

With her second podium of the weekend, Anna Fenninger almost made it a triumphant return to St Anton for the HEAD World Cup Rebels. It took a herculean effort from Tina Maze to dislodge Fenninger from the top step of the podium. Fabienne Suter took third just ahead of Lindsey Vonn, Maria Hoefl-Riesch and Julia Mancuso as the HEAD World Cup Rebels packed the top 6 places!

After the race Fenninger explained, “I know I can ski fast in Super G, the difficulty is to keep the pace all the way down. I skied out in St. Moritz and now I am second here. I am really happy with the result but hopefully I will manage to ski a little faster next time and be 0.04 seconds ahead and not behind.”

Fenninger was happy with her "really good run," although satisfied she felt that fortune has been lacking, “but maybe it comes back again so soon," she said afterwards. Fenninger had taken the lead from Vonn when she came through the finish and it looked as if she might hold on for her first win in a speed event. "The run has been good for me, I have a lot of chances and it worked out," said Fenninger.

Lindsey Vonn missed out on the podium by the slenderest of margins, 0.01 seconds, Maria Hoefl-Riesch in fifth and Julia Mancuso in sixth, this made it four HEAD World Cup Rebels in the top six! "I could have gone better, but I am satisfied but lack self-confidence a little bit," said Vonn, who has not decided on a starting slalom in Flachau. Vonn won her 8th and 9th races of her career in St Anton (she now has 57 wins) back in 2007 but after the recent injury, 4th place was a great result for her she felt.

Having taken the decision not to race the Downhill, Lizzi Goergl was back on track she felt in taking 14th in the race: "I think I'm on the right track," said Goergl: "I have trained well and now wants to take the next steps to regain the old form."
