August 19th, 2008

HEAD player Stanislas Wawrinka and partner Roger Federer earned an Olympic Gold Medal in men's doubles after a 6-3, 6-4, 6-7(4), 6-3 victory over the Swedish team of Thomas Johansson and HEAD player Simon Aspelin, who took home the Silver Medal. On their way to the gold medal, Wawrinka and Federer defeated the No. 1 seeded Bryan brothers, playing for the US team, 7-6(6), 6-4.

"During the match, I just tried to be focused on the game," said Wawrinka. "After the match, of course, for me, it's a dream come true to win the Olympic gold medal. It's unbelievable."

The win rounds out a fantastic season for Wawrinka, who took home the doubles championship title from the Allianz Suisse Open in Gstaad in July and also advanced to the singles finals at Doha in December and the ATP Master Series Tournament in Rome in May.

Wawrinka is now ranked No. 10 in the South African Airways ATP ranking, rising 25 points from a ranking of No. 35 in March 2008.
