HEAD Pros Earn Trip to Wimbledon Quarterfinals

July 1st, 2009

After a week’s worth of play at tradition-rich Wimbledon, HEAD’s top players have battled their way into the Quarterfinals. HEAD players No. 3 Andy Murray, No. 4 Novak Djokovic and No. 35 Tommy Haas represent three of the eight men remaining in the tournament with hopes of taking home a grand slam title.

Murray got off to a fast start in the tournament stringing together solid performances to reach the quarterfinals, while only dropping three sets along the way. Among those defeated were HEAD players Ernests Gulbis and No. 18 Stanislav Wawrinka, whom he bested in his last match 2-6, 6-3, 6-3, 5-7, 6-3.

Murray, who plays with a MicroGel Radical MP, is striving to become the first British men’s singles champion at The Championships since 1936.

In other tournament news, No. 4 Novak Djokovic cruised into the quarterfinals after a close match to begin the tournament. Djokovic, who plays with the new YOUTEK Speed Pro, has only dropped one set in tournament play in four straight matches.

In his next match, Djokovic faces fellow HEAD player Tommy Haas, who is making his eleventh appearance at The Championships, in a rematch from the Gerry Weber Open final earlier this month. Haas plays with a MicroGel Prestige Mid racquet.

The HEAD brand has earned great exposure thus far at Wimbledon in the men’s single draw as seven out of 16 players in the fourth round play with HEAD racquets.

In the women’s competition, No. 8 HEAD player Victoria Azarenka, who plays with a MicroGel Extreme Pro with Teflon® polymer, put together a string of solid performances to reach the quarterfinal round where she was bested by world No. 2 Serena Williams 6-2, 6-3.
