Hoefl Riesch takes second in Flachau

Maria Hoefl Riesch recovered from the disappointment of crashing out in Courchevel to grab her best result of the season so far in taking second. With Marlies Schild in devastating form, Hoefl Riesch was the only racer able to live within half a second of the Austrian. Despite being third after the first run, Hoefl Riesch powered her way down the night slalom and was able to swap position with Tina Maze for the second spot.

Talking after the race, Hoefl Riesch explained that “second place is like a win for me. Marlies is in great form and can win everywhere.” Despite Schild winning her third race in the discipline this season, Lindsey Vonn placed eighth to score important points in the race for the Overall. This was the 60th career podium for Hoefl-Riesch, her 21st in Slalom.

With a large holiday crowd watching, this replacement for the cancelled Levi race, lived up to the promise and need of an enthralling race. The large crowd packed the side of the course and around the finish giving a great advert for women’s ski racing. Despite Schild being in commanding form, this was the closest the chasing pack had been to the Austrian this season.

For Lindsey Vonn, this was her best slalom result in over a year: “I didn't ski as aggressive as I wanted to on the first run, but it was a solid run without any big mistakes. I was happy to be in there for a second run,” said Vonn. “Slalom is easier now, I feel really comfortable. I felt like I was skiing really well in the first run from Courchevel before I went out. I know I can be there, it's just a matter of skiing more aggressively.”

The girl’s World Cup tour now takes a break over the festive period and they return for another technical double header in Lienz between Christmas and New Year.
