Fenninger ends season with Podium

Anna Fenninger ended the Giant Slalom season with second place to the defending World Cup Champion, Viktoria Rebensburg. Fenninger, who won her first World Cup race in Lienz in December posted the second fastest time on the first run and then extended her lead as she waited in the finish for Rebensburg to come down. In the scorching sun that gave the World Cup finals a tremendous atmosphere, Fenninger had done all she could in terms of trying to win the race, yet had to settle for second.

The race had been billed as the big shoot out for the Giant Slalom Globe between Lindsey Vonn and Rebensburg. Vonn was also chasing twenty world cup points that would give her the record for the most amount of World Cup points scored by a skier in a single season. For Vonn, the loss of her stick in the start gate on the second run meant that the point’s record will have to wait for another year. Having won 12 races, four crystal globes and taken the record for the most amount of points by a female, Vonn believes “everything happens for a reason.”

Fenninger had “put everything into the last race. It was my goal to do well here,” she explained after the race. “It was almost perfect. To win at home would have been brilliant, I tried but Vicky is in such good form and so strong that I can only congratulate her.”

Vonn will be back next season after training hard over the summer and was still happy to have placed second in the Giant Slalom Globe. “Last year I was fifteenth or so, so this is a great improvement,” she admitted. The 2000 point mark is “a great motivation,” she declared “but it is a lot of points and very difficult to do.”

With the Overall Globe, the Downhill Globe, the Super G Globe and the Super Combined Globe already in her possession as well as twelve race wins, Vonn believes it will a few days before she will feel the satisfaction of the season. “I am really proud of what I have accomplished this season,” she declared “but there is still more to come. I will train hard over the summer,” she ended with!
