It was a race that almost never was but Julia Mancuso managed to fight her way down through the fog to win her 5th career World Championship medal. Mancuso has joined the HEAD World Cup Rebels this year and to be in with a chance of winning medals and major races was why she joined the HEAD World Cup rebels. Impressive splits gave Mancuso a hint of victory but Tina Maze and Lara Gut edged her out for the gold and silver.
“Today was very difficult. It was a long day,” Mancuso explained after the race. With think fog encasing the middle of the run and causing the race to be delayed thirteen times. It was finally given the OK to run at almost three pm and then came a further delay as a course slipper fell and needed to be airlifted off. “My run was not perfect,” she continued “but I made it down.”
Mancuso was charging and determined to put in a great run yet like a number of other athletes came in hard on one gate and just managed to squeeze past. “I was probably going too fast,” she added on why she almost missed the gate.
“I think that might've been one of the most difficult races I've ever been in. It was a really long course and a lot of hurry up and wait. I didn't know I'd be so tired at the end of the run. Every time, no matter what kind of run, I know I could have a much better run. But to finish on the podium is kind of all you can ask for,” explained Mancuso, “but I want that Gold,” she added.
While Mancuso reflected on the run, for Lindsey Vonn the season is over as she crashed badly on the jump and on landing her knee buckled. According to U.S. Ski Team Medical Director Kyle Wilkens, Vonn suffered a torn ACL and MCL in her right knee and a lateral tibial plateau fracture. She will be out for the remainder of this season but is expected to return to racing for the 2013-14 Audi FIS World Cup season and the 2014 Olympic Winter Games in Sochi.
Defending Champion Lizz Goergl finished 11th while Maria Hoefl-Riesch and Anna Fenninger both skied out after missing gates. Due to the race starting so late and the weather changing for the worse, the race was stopped early.
