Ligety wraps up Giant Slalom season with win number 6
March 16th, 2013

After eight races in the season, six of them had the same name at the top of the leaderboard after the second run: Ted Ligety. The HEAD World Cup Rebel made this win in Lenzerheide his sixth win of the season, a season he has dominated from the start and has resulted in his winning the Globe for the fourth time as well as Gold in Schladming three times over (Giant Slalom, Super G and Super Combined). Ligety was joined on the podium in Lenzerheide by Marcel Hirscher and Alexis Pinturault, who were also second and third in the season long standings to Ligety.

“It’s so ridiculous; it has been such an amazing year,” Ligety explained, “I would never have expected it and in a way it is kind of a bummer as I will never be able to that again. A really cool season and to finish up with a victory – I could not be more pleased,” he added.

As has been customary this season, Ligety lead from the first run and despite a charge from Hirscher that saw him rise from fourth to second, Ligety responded with the second fastest second run time.

“It is so tough to choose between the Globe and my three Gold medals; they are all so awesome and they all mean so much,” Ligety said. “ But the Globe is really cool as you have to be good all year while for the World Championships you could get lucky here and there. Anyhow it is an awesome feeling to have the season I just had,” Ligety declared.

Afterwards Ligety explained ominously for his rivals that he will have to go away and train hard if he is to win so much again!

While Ligety lead the standings, Aksel Lund Svindal saw his faint hopes of winning the Overall disappear as he crashed out on the first run yet he still took fifth in the season long standings in Giant Slalom. With his win, Ligety further cemented his place in third in the Overall standings.

With six wins and two second places, the Giant Slalom belonged to one person this season: Mr. Ted Ligety. HEAD also wrapped up the award as the most successful ski in Men’s Giant Slalom
