Julia Mancuso returned to Garmisch looking to defend her win in the corresponding race last season and came away with second place: “I want to win a race this year but I am happy to tie for second,” she explained after the race, “it is nice to be on the second spot for the podium,” she added. With Anna Fenninger taking fourth, this was a solid day for the HEAD World Cup Rebels. Tina Weirather won the race with Tina Maze in joint second with Mancuso.
“I skied fast today and although I made a couple of mistakes today and with those I am really happy to still be fast. I lost my rhythm in the turny sections, for sure I lost time there but it is hard to be perfect all the way to the finish,” Mancuso explained.
“I love racing in Garmisch, the hill is a little steeper and a little more technical as well as fast and this suits me well,” explained Mancuso. “I will keep fighting to try and have that perfect run.”
For Anna Fenninger, she felt it was her own fault that she did not make the podium as she felt she was not fast enough “but it was not an easy race. I have not skied Super G for a long time, and the last one, the World Championships, was not a good one.” With the top racers so close together, Fenninger knew that with one mistake, you struggle to make the top positions. Fenninger made one close to the finish and this is what cost her a place on the podium she felt.
Fenninger used a new Super G ski at the World Championships and used the same ski in the race in Garmisch as well. Fenninger is feeling better after her illness in Meribel and was already looking forward to the Downhill and Super G scheduled for the weekend!
With Maria Hoefl-Riesch racing at Garmisch, her home town slope, for the 18th time, did she feel the pressure of racing at home? “No,” she smiled! 11th place was the reward for her this time.
With two races left in the Super G World Cup, Julia Mancuso remains in second place behind Tina Maze with Lindsey Vonn in third and Anna Fenninger in fifth and an outside chance of the Globe. Maria Hoefl-Riesch is sixth.
