The superlatives are great yet once they are used in connection with Lindsey Vonn and her exploits in Lake Louise; new ones are needed! This was Vonn at her peak as she won her fifth straight race in Lake Louise, her 54th World Cup win, putting her one behind second on the all time wins in history. In her last three wins, the closest second place has got to her has been 1.68 seconds; this time it was 1.73 seconds. Stacey Cook took second place with third place shared by HEAD World Cup Rebel Maria Hoefl-Riesch and Tina Weirather, just one hundredth behind Cook!
Despite the bad weather disrupting the visibility of the racers, Vonn was in a class of her own. No one could get near to her. Vonn started with her favourite bib number 16 and everything went her way. Weather? What bad weather? Vonn attacked and gave the rest a lesson in downhill ski racing. Later runners were affected by the weather with Lara Gut being flagged and given a rerun.
After the race, Vonn commented: ““It's been a rough couple of weeks for me being sick and not having the best results in the technical events. I love it here in Lake Louise. I love going fast. I wasn't feeling well yesterday and I didn't do the training run, which I've never done before in my life! So I was nervous today, but I knew what I had to do. I know this hill better than anywhere else in the world, I gave it my best shot, and I'm really happy with my run.”
While Vonn was happy with her run, Anna Fenninger had to deal with the worst conditions and despite being one of the favourites came in in 29th spot. When the wind is as random as it was during the race, luck plays a cruel hand sometimes. Vonn was lucky with her weather window and took full advantage.
This was win number 12 in Lake Louise for Vonn, her tenth in the downhill. This is the level that the rest of the field have to now raise their game to!
