HEAD squash player Laura Massaro has taken one of the top honours in world squash after being named “Player of the Year” at the World Squash Awards in the Dutch port city of Rotterdam. The British ace could not have been more pleased with her success. "This is an achievement I’m really proud of," said the 27-year-old who won the US Open Championship in Philadelphia with her Xenon 135 CT racquet this autumn.
"To win over - HEAD rival - Jenny Duncalf (Cyano 115) who had an amazing year as well was a real shock. It means so much to win this award that was voted for by the WISPA membership." The world No. 5 and British No. 2 player added: "My best memories of 2011 are of winning my first ever WISPA gold event in Cleveland and then following it up with the British Nationals and the US Open!"
The prestigious World Squash Awards, which began in 2005 as a way of formally recognizing the best in the racquet sport, featured most top players and representatives of federations and the industry form around the world. The event coincided with the World Squash Day.
